Here are the best jade varieties you can grow

The Number 1 Secret to Making a Jade Plant Bushier

The best and most effective way to make a jade plant bushy is to prune it actively. However, it is essential that you prune the plant in the correct manner to ensure it works.

Before you grab the shear, it is important to understand and locate the ‘rings’ around the stems. These are the points where the leaves used to be, and once they fall off, these ‘rings’ are created on the stem.

The key here is to prune the jade plant right above the leaf scar or the rings on the stem. This will trick the plant into growing two more branches from the cut portion, which will enable it to have more leaves, enabling it to become bushy!

Also, avoid snipping more than 15-20% of the plant and leave the branch you want to get old.

A Tip: If your jade plant has become leggy due to a lack of sufficient light, cut back the weak portions and locate the plant in a bright spot, it’ll perk up soon.

Fun Fact: Do not throw away the pruned leaves or stems. Keep them for three or four days till they form a callous. Lay the leaves horizontally on the pot, and after some time, they will become new plants.

For stem cuttings, plant them in the soil upright. Place the pot where it can get bright, indirect light, and you will soon have a new jade plant in no time! Just make sure not to propagate diseased or damaged plant parts.

How to Get a Big Jade Plant?

1. Keep it in the Correct Position

You can make your jade plant bushier by placing it in the right spot. Keep it in direct light, and the plant will form bushy new foliage.

On the other hand, if you keep the plant in a dark area, the stems will stretch in search of sunlight.

A Tip: Keep the plant at a location where it gets bright, indirect sunlight. 3-4 hours of morning sunlight will do wonders for its growth.

2. Water the Plant Correctly

If you want to grow jade plant bushier, don’t grow this succulent in moist soil. Also, avoid overhead watering.

The most important thing to note is to keep it on the drier side rather than regularly watering the plant. Water only when the top 1 inch of soil in the pot feels dry to the touch.

3. Feed to Boost the Growth

The Jade plant does not require a fixed schedule for fertilization like other houseplants. Feed it once in 6-8 weeks when the plant is in the active growth period with an all-purpose liquid fertilizer diluted to 25 percent (1/4) of its recommended strength.

This works really well when the plant receives plenty of dappled light all day long.

A Tip: If you live in a cold climate, stop fertilization from mid-fall till winter.

4. Plant them Together

The simplest and quickest way to make the jade look bushier is to grow multiple plants in one pot. Plant 2-3 plants together, and they will look bushier.

You can also group 2-3 small pots together to make them appear big and bushy!

Winter Care

Move the plant away from windowpanes or any spot where it will be exposed to cold drafts. If you live in a temperate region, the plant’s growth will slow down during winters, so avoid watering it often.
