1. Get the Right Piece of Rock

Get a medium-sized rock with gaps, crevices, and cut sections. Clean it properly to eliminate debris and dirt.

2. Place the Bonsai

Carefully pull the tree or plant from its temporary container and brush out as much soil as possible from the roots. Be extra careful not to cause any harm or injury.

Untangle the roots with a root fork and cut away any dying, dead, and rotting parts with a pair of clean and sharp scissors or shears.

Place the tree over the rock and guide the roots in the crevices, cracks, and hollows as they usually look in nature. Do not place all the roots in the same place because it can block the view of your bonsai plant from all sides.

3. Secure the Roots

Attach the roots with a copper wire or raffia and cover them with grafting tape except for the bottom part from where they will grow.

4. Place it in a Pot

Now place the bonsai, along with the rock, in a container or a tray where the bottom exposed parts of the roots come in contact with the growing medium.

Taking Care of Bonsai on Rocks

  • Place it in a location that receives bright but indirect sunlight for 5-6 hours daily.
  • Fertilize the plant only after 30-45 days from planting using a 10:6:6 blend, diluted to 1/4 of its strength, during spring.
