We’re assuming that you’ve read our previous post on How to make a birdcage planter. If not, please read that first.

Let’s see how to grow succulents in a birdcage

Step One: If you are growing succulents, take cuttings of your favorite plants or buy them.

Step Two: Fill the birdcage with a well-drained potting mix for succulents. You can make that soil at home, too by mixing 3 parts of potting soil, 2 parts of sand and 1 part of perlite.

Step Three: Plant tall succulents in the middle and small on the sides. Space them by keeping their full size and growing habit in mind.

Step Four: Insert some trailing succulents from outside. Make a hole in liner before inserting them as inserting them forcefully may damage them.

Step Five: Pour soil to cover the plants properly.

Step Six: Embed small pebbles on top of the soil. They will look beautiful and work as mulch.

Once all the steps are completed your succulent filled birdcage is ready. You can either hang it inside or outside, your choice, but take care to hang it on a less windy spot.

  • I am going to use a birdcage planter that I previously had vining geraniums. This year, I want a succulent hanger. Getting excited waiting for warm weather to get here in Ohio. Thanks for the instructions.

  • i would place a saucer at bottom of birdcage 1st (prevent rust and water drips)then add coconut fibre/spag moss/bark like dirt and start adding plant layering as you go adding a few small stones to weight plants down so they will take root…..
